Auckland based artist Ben Caldwell has been showing in public galleries and sculpture parks throughout New Zealand since 2002, most notably at The Dowse and Pataka. “What is” is his first major solo exhibition since completing an MFA at the University of Auckland this year. Through the use of 3-Dimensional objects, sculpture, installation, and paintings Ben offers an appreciative and philosophical enquiry into the nature of life through art and objects.
Ben’s artistic practice explores the nature and being of objects, nesting in the philosophical enquiry of object oriented ontology, specifically those operating as singular – ‘beings as one’ , and as part of a wider category – ‘beings as many’.
This exhibition asks questions such as: What is a butterfly? What is colour? What is a painting? What is a piece of wood? What is an army? What is?
